The story

Fourteen days through the heart of Sri Lanka — every UNESCO heritage site, three of the country's finest national parks, the world's most scenic train ride, and a Galle Fort heritage hotel suite to land softly at the end. Heritage Tea Trails bungalows, helicopter transfers between regions, archaeologist-led private guides, and a single dedicated chauffeur for the duration.

This is our most-requested journey, and the one we've refined most over twelve years. It opens with the cultural triangle — Sigiriya rock fortress, the cave-temples of Dambulla, and the ancient cities of Anuradhapura and Polonnaruwa, where archaeologists from the University of Peradeniya guide your private morning visits. Then up into the hill country: a stay in a colonial planter's bungalow at Norwood, an estate-led tea tasting, the Demodara Loop train ride down to Ella.

The middle days slow down: a private safari camp at Yala on Block 1, where leopard density is the highest on earth. Three game drives, two of them at first light. Then the south coast — a heritage suite inside Galle Fort, blue-whale boat from Mirissa at dawn, and three days of slow living before flying out from Colombo with a half-day at the Gangaramaya temple before the airport.

Day-by-day itinerary

A detailed week-by-week sketch — every day fully customizable.

Day01
Colombo · Negombo

Soft arrival

Greeted at the airport by your dedicated chauffeur and a chilled coconut. A 20-minute drive to Negombo for a beachfront landing — first night at a sea-view boutique hotel to recover from the flight before the country opens up.

  • Airport meet & assist · fast-track immigration
  • Private chauffeur (the same one for 14 days)
  • Welcome briefing over dinner
Stay · Jetwing Beach, Negombo
Day02
Anuradhapura · Sigiriya

The Sacred City

Drive north through coconut country to Anuradhapura — the first capital of Sri Lanka, abandoned in 993 AD and still half-swallowed by jungle. A private archaeologist guides you through the ruined monasteries and the Sri Maha Bodhi tree, oldest historically-recorded planted tree in the world (288 BC). Onward to Sigiriya for the night.

Stay · Wild Coast Tented Lodge, Sigiriya
Day03
Sigiriya · Dambulla

Lion Rock at first light

Pre-dawn climb of Sigiriya rock fortress before the heat and the crowds — your guide opens the gate twenty minutes before public access. Brunch at the lodge. Afternoon visit to the Dambulla cave temples, with their 153 Buddha statues painted on the cave walls between the 1st century BC and 18th century AD.

  • Pre-opening Sigiriya climb
  • Cave temples with archaeologist guide
  • Sunset cocktail at Pidurangala viewpoint
Stay · Wild Coast Tented Lodge (continued)
Day04-05
Polonnaruwa · Kandy

Ancient capitals & the temple

Polonnaruwa, the second medieval capital — by bicycle (e-bike if preferred), guided. Then drive south to Kandy via the spice gardens of Matale. Evening puja at the Temple of the Sacred Tooth Relic. Day five is a Kandyan dance performance, the Royal Botanical Gardens at Peradeniya, and a private tour of the Kandy Museum.

Stay · Kandy House (heritage planter's home)
Day06-08
Hatton · Norwood · Ella

Tea country in slow motion

The road climbs into mist. Three nights at one of the Ceylon Tea Trails bungalows — colonial planter's home, twelve guests maximum, ten staff. Estate walks with the planter, picnic lunches in tea fields, a tasting flight that begins at 5,000 feet of elevation. Day eight is the world's most beautiful train ride: Hatton → Ella, observation-car seats, the Demodara Loop and the Nine Arches Bridge.

Stay · Ceylon Tea Trails, Norwood
Day09-10
Yala

First-light leopard

Two nights at a private tented camp on the edge of Yala Block 1, the most leopard-dense place on earth. Three game drives, two at first light, with our chief naturalist Ranjith — twenty years tracking these specific cats. Sundowner at a hidden lagoon. Star-bath at the camp's open-air tub.

Stay · Wild Coast Tented Lodge, Yala
Day11-13
Mirissa · Galle

The southern coast

Helicopter transfer Yala → Galle (40 min, otherwise a 4 hr drive). Three nights inside Galle Fort at the Galle Fort Hotel — a 1684 Dutch warehouse converted into a 13-room heritage boutique. Days at your pace: dawn whale-watching at Mirissa, an antique cotton-buying lesson with a third-generation merchant, dinner at the rooftop of the Old Hospital.

Stay · Galle Fort Hotel
Day14
Colombo · Departure

A graceful exit

Drive up the southern expressway to Colombo. A morning at the Gangaramaya Temple and a final lunch at the Galle Face Hotel verandah. Late afternoon transfer to BIA airport. Goodbye, until next time.

  • Day room at Cinnamon Grand if departing late
  • Airport meet & assist (one-way)
  • Personal travel-album hand-delivered three weeks later

Frequently asked

For the full circuit, December through March is ideal — dry across both coasts and the hill country. April–May and September–November are also excellent for most regions but can have brief afternoon showers in the south.
Completely. This is the foundation we start from — every day, every hotel, every meal, every activity is yours to adjust. Most travelers swap 2–4 things and add their own twists.
30% to confirm, balance due 45 days before travel. Free cancellation up to 60 days before; partial refund up to 30 days before. Travel insurance is required (we can recommend a provider).
Yes. The pace is intentionally gentle, no day exceeds 4 hours of driving thanks to the helicopter transfers, and Sigiriya is the only steep climb (which is optional — a Pidurangala alternative exists for less mobile travelers).
Always. Vegetarian, vegan, gluten-free, halal, kosher and allergy-aware menus are arranged at every property in advance.
